U.N. says world faces largest humanitarian crisis since 1945 with over 20 million people facing starvation and famineStephen O'Brien told the U.N. Security Council on Friday that "without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death" and "many more will suffer and die from disease." He urged an immediate injection of funds for Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and northeastern Nigeria. O'Brien said the largest humanitarian crisis is in Yemen where two-thirds of the population — 18.8 million people — need aid and more than seven million don't know where their next meal will come from. He said that's three million more chronically hungry people than in January. apnews.com/70451d500122441bb7ca37957a4421ee/UN-says-world-faces-largest-humanitarian-crisis-since-1945?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP

U.N. says world faces largest humanitarian crisis since 1945As she watches her home Somaliland become ravaged by famine, a senior official has put out an emotional plea to the world to not “wait until people die”. With more than one and a half million people on the brink of starving to death, Ayan Mahamoud says it is “already too late - but every day counts, every hour counts”. Speaking to ITV News, Ms Mahamoud broke down in tears recalling how nomad communities have “lost all their animals.” Her plea comes as the UN says the world faces its largest humanitarian crisis since 1945 with over 20 million people facing starvation and famine. Somaliland, along with other Horn of Africa countries, has been starved of rain for three consecutive years, leaving over half of the country's 18 million livestock dead. www.itv.com/news/2017-03-10/somaliland-famine-dont-wait-for-people-to-die/

Inside South Sudan: ITV News witnesses the human cost of man-made famineAfter years of conflict and economic instability, famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, with the UN warning 100,000 people face starvation with a further 1 million at risk. According to Unicef, more than 270,000 children are suffering severe malnutrition amid this humanitarian crisis. The world’s first famine in six years. Of all South Sudan’s torments, hunger now holds the greatest fear. It is a crisis of humanity that is entirely man-made. Years of civil war - a tribal struggle for domination the UN has warned verges on the brink of genocide - have forced million to leave their homes, their cattle, and theirs harvests. The result is a quarter of the country’s population in need of urgent help. www.itv.com/news/2017-03-09/famine-has-become-south-sudans-deadliest-foe/
