Nearly 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria to fight against ISIS, Pentagon saysAlmost 1,000 U.S. troops are in Syria as part of the ongoing preparation for the fight to oust the Islamic State group from its self-declared headquarters of Raqqa. Around 500 hundred soldiers were deployed into Syria with heavy artillery guns, senior U.S. official said Wednesday. According to the Pentagon, an additional "400 or so" Marines and Army Rangers have arrived in the last few days. The deployment is temporary, said Coalition spokesman U.S. Air Force Colonel John Dorrian, and the additional forces were sent to Manbij in the coutnry's north in order to create "reassurance." www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/syria/1.776140

B-52 bombers heading to fight ISISFor the first time in 12 years, B-52 bombers from Minot Air Force Base will deploy to the Middle East for combat operations. Members of the 23rd Bomb Squadron "Barons" and other support people across the base will be leaving shortly for a deployment to the Middle East. An advance group is already there setting up for the combat operations. The bomb squadron members have been going through extensive training to prepare for the deployment, base officials said. Last spring, the Air Force announced it was sending B-52 Stratofortresses into the fight against ISIS. Bombers from Barksdale AFB, La., were the first ones sent, according to Air Force information. www.grandforksherald.com/news/4230825-minots-b-52-bombers-heading-fight-isis

Charles Lister @charles_Lister 1 minute ago Turkey says relations with the U.S will be “seriously damaged” if the Raqqa op is led by YPG/SDF. But Washington’s support for the Kurdish militia has infuriated Ankara, which considers the group an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK), which has fought a three-decade insurgency against the Turkish state. Turkey, a Nato member and critical ally of the US and Europe in the fight against Islamist extremism, has insisted its forces and Syrian rebels it backs should lead the charge for Raqqa, instead of the Kurds its accuses of displacing Arabs in a land grab. Turkey sent tanks and troops into Syria last year ostensibly to fight Isis, but also to push back Syrian Kurds and create a buffer zone deep in Syrian territory. Members of Syria’s Kurdish militia say their goal is to recapture Raqqa and use it to cement a pivotal role in future negotiations on Syria. www.ft.com/content/21d9ba10-04c0-11e7-aa5b-6bb07f5c8e12
