Syrian Kurdish YPG says Raqqa attack to start in early AprilThe head of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said a U.S.-backed assault to drive Islamic State from its de-facto capital Raqqa would begin at the start of April and the YPG would be taking part, despite fierce opposition from neighboring Turkey. A spokesman for the U.S. Pentagon, Navy Captain Jeff Davis, said no decision had been made yet on the Raqqa offensive. The comments by YPG commander Sipan Hemo to Reuters were the first indication of a date of an attack. In a written reply to questions, Hemo, who rarely if ever appears in the media, said: "Regarding the decision to liberate Raqqa and storm it, the matter is decided and at the start of the month of April the military operation will begin." www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-ypg-exclusive-idUSKBN16O218?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=Social

Details about the last Israeli strikes on SyriaAccording to the Israelis, four fighter jets targeted strategic weapons shipments on their way to Hezbollah, believed to be Scud-D long-range missiles (700 kilometers). The second bevy flew over the Syrian, Jordanian and Israeli borders, since Israel occupies the Golan Heights. One of the marauding fighters dropped its altitude and was discovered by the Syrian radar system, revealing the rest of the aircrafts. "Sam 5" missiles were launched toward the planes ; two rocket fragments landed in the Irbid north of Amman, while the third rocket was headed towards the Israeli territory and was then intercepted by the” arrow 2" Israeli system over the Jordan Valley. Sirens were launched in the Israeli territories, and Israel closed its airspace for hours in front of the civil aviation in the northern region. english.alarabiya.net/en/features/2017/03/18/Netanyahu-Our-missles-targeted-Hezbollah-s-advanced-weapons-in-Syria-.html

Damascus sees fierce clashes after rebel attackSyrian security forces are engaged in fierce clashes with rebels on the eastern outskirts of the capital Damascus, residents say. Artillery shells and rockets landed inside the heart of the city as part of a surprise rebel attack, they say. The insurgents detonated two suicide car bombs in Jobar district before trying to storm government defence lines, observers said. The military responded to the attack with air strikes. Syrian state media says secret tunnels were also used to launch the assault in Jobar. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-39321098

RUSSIAN FEDERATION DEFENSE MINISTRY refuted information about deploying military bases in AleppoInformation from a number of foreign media about the deployment of a "new Russian military base" in the region of the Syrian city of Afrin in the province of Aleppo does not correspond to reality. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense. "There are no plans to deploy new Russian military bases on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic," the military department said. The fact that Russia allegedly will build a new military base in north-western Syria earlier reported, in particular, Reuters, which referred to representatives of the Kurdish militia. One of the offices of the Russian Center for reconciliation of the warring parties will be located in the province of Aleppo near the village of Afrin, in the area of contact between the detachments of the Kurdish militia and the Turkish-controlled formations of the Syrian Free Army, "the Defense Ministry concluded. tvzvezda.ru/news/vstrane_i_mire/content/201703201916-ozem.htm

Israel to declare air defense shield fully operationalIsrael's multi-tier air defense missile system will be fully operational early next month with the deployment of the David's Sling interceptor, a senior Israeli air force officer said on Monday. David's Sling, designed to shoot down rockets fired from 100 to 200 kilometers away, will be the final piece of a shield that already includes short-range Iron Dome and long-range Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missiles. "In the next two weeks we will declare operational the David's Sling and at that time we will have completed our multi-tier (defense capability)," said the officer who could not be identified under military rules. www.reuters.com/article/us-israel-airdefence-idUSKBN16R1RW
